What Amy Schumers #StopKavanaugh Arrest Subtly Says About Race in the U.S.

What Amy Schumers StopKavanaugh Arrest Subtly Says About Race in the U.S. For the last few weeks, women have been taking a stand against the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Curt. Whether theyve been discoursing on Twitter or taking to the streets, women of all kinds have been showing up to keep an alleged sexual assaulter off the court. And Hollywoods recent involvement in the protests have brought even more awareness to this important civil unrest.Yesterday, Amy Schumer and Emily Ratajkowski made the nachrichten for joining a sit-in at the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington D.C.. Schumer is the cousin of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and is an active advocate for womens rights and gun control. Ratajkowski also has a long history of supporting womens equality.Despite the actresses meaningful contributions to the protest itself (Schumer was taped speaking at the sit-in), their participation hasnt been the center of their media coverage.Instead, their run ins with the versicherungsschein have been making headlines. According to Ratajkowskis Twitter, she was arrested during the protest. It was also However, videos have surfaced of the stars arrests. The police ask the women if theyd like to be arrested, hand them wristbands, then escort them out of the building. It was a largely calm affair, with no handcuffs, no weapons, and no struggle. And while all interactions between the police and protestors should probably look like this, we know they dont.People of color who protest in the United States are often met with tear gas, pepper spray, and gunpoint. They experience arrest in a much different way than Schumer and Ratajkowski ever would. They are stopped and frisked. They are brutalized. And they are met with handcuffs instead of wristbands. Its difficult to label Schumer and Ratajkowskis interaction with the police as an arrest when we know what arrest really looks like for people of color. They are lucky to come out of an arrest alive. And theyre often arrested without doing any wrong. White women are given the ability to speak without facing the saatkorn fears WOC face. And thats a privilege. It gives them a stronger voice in politics, in policy, and in all aspects of social life. But hearing about white women getting arrested makes white American women feel good. It alleviates us of some of the guilt we should experience for propping up a justice system that brutalizes people of color. Thats why this arrest will be shared on Twitter and why it will be written about in magazines.Women shouldnt be arrested for supporting women and peacefully protesting. But white women should also realize their arrests are a lesser trauma than what their sisters can experience for speeding, forgetting to pay a fine, or, really, simply existing. Your race still impacts your experience with the justice system, and we cant forget that.Schumer and Ratajkowskis arrests remind us that in our fight for womens equality, intersectionality i s key. White women experience privilege, even in our lowest moments. Even when it seems like we live in a country that hates women of all kinds. And with Brett Kavanaughs nomination moving forward, that seems to feel truer every day.

When your Dream Job becomes a Nightmare

When your Dream Job becomes a Nightmare When we go into a job search, we often have an idea of the job that would be a perfect matchour dream job. You know the one. Its in an exciting industry, at a high-profile company, with a swanky title that makes all other offers pale in comparison. But what if once you get the job, and all of the perks that go with, you realize your dream job is the job from hell? At that point it may be useful to begin viewing your occupation in the context of a love gone wrong, with all of the requisite processes like grieving, recovery, and rebounding. Continuing with the failed love story metaphor, think about what its like when you first fall in loveall of the time together spent fawning over one another, the love, the laughter, and so forth. Well, the same can be said for the job you worked so hard to land in order to live the life of your dreams. At first, all you can think about are the perks, the bragging rights, and all of the benefits that come with your position. What does it matter that you work double time each week and your workplace is a den of prima donnas, air heads, and psychopaths? But as the initial days and weeks turn to months or even years, those perks may not seem so impressive any longer, while the status of your position may now fail to feed your attempts at self-flattery. In fact, you may realize that your performance has begun to drop, your motivation is flagging, and your day-to-day tasks have become unbearable. Does this mean the honeymoon is over? The answer is likely yes.The biggest step is acknowledging that your job just isnt doing it for you anymore. At that point you must begin the struggle that comes with realizing that you need to start giving up the perfect opportunity that you worked so hard to achieve. There is always the danger of falling into the trap of second guessing yourself and confusing the convenience o f keeping your current job with the original passion you felt when you first came on board. The key is to remember that there is nothing inherently wrong with your job or yourself, but that you simply would make a better fit somewhere else.Nows the time to begin the job search again to find your better fitting job. At this point, it is vital to dissect the reasons why you have decided to leave your dream job in the first place. Realizing the letdowns of your current job will help you identify what you want in the next one. Look to your primary interests and motivations to direct you to a job that will help you be happy. Once youve lined up a new job offer, its time to break ties with your old career beau and move forward in your quest for life fulfillment.

Find out How Much Money Airline Pilots Really Earn

Find out How Much Money Airline Pilots Really EarnFind out How Much Money Airline Pilots Really EarnIf you were to poll a group of random airline pilots about their salaries, youd get a surprisingly vast range of numbers, and statistics with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics bears that out. While the median salary for commercial pilots was about $78,000 as of 2017, the lowest 10 percent were earning less than $43,000, while the top 10 percent were earning more than $152,000. But interestingly, while airline pilot salaries vary wildly, they are pretty straightforward. So why the huge variation in pay between airline to airline or pilot to pilot when all pilots have to meet the same stringent requirements? That answer is that pilots are paid based on different factors. Similar to a U.S. military pay scale, pilot pay is dependent on many things, like how long a pilot has been with a company, whether the pilot works for a dezentral airline or a major airline, the region or country in which the pilot works, his or her seniority, and whether he or she is a first officer or a captain. And lets not forget the state of the aviation industry in general. Pilot pay is also linked to global economic health. State of the Industry The aviation industry is a cyclical industry. It goes up and down just like any other, but the very interesting thing about airline travel is that its both widely dependent on the economy and it acts as an independent economic force throughout the world. Aviation- specifically air travel- changes along with the global economic climate, but it also provides secondary economic benefits to other industries, like tourism and manufacturing. A change in one can affect the other. As of 2018, the air travel industry is healthy. After the economic recession in the early 2000s, airlines seem to be in a period of growth, especially in Asia. This means that airlines are hiring pilots again after years and years of instability resulting in airline mergers , bankruptcies, and employee furloughs. Pilot hiring has reached a peak, and airlines are finding that they need to be competitive with their compensation and benefits offered to pilots, and subsequently keep them from moving on to other airlines, increasing pay and benefits for pilots. In 2018, Envoy Air announced a $45,000 signing bonus for qualifying pilots who joined the airline. As such, pilot salaries have increased along with the strengthening economy, and they are expected to continue to increase in the future. But the airline industry is volatile, and in time, pilot hiring will slow again, and ultimately stop, and furloughs will be necessary for airlines to keep operating. During these inevitable times, airline pilot jobs are in demand and airline pilot salaries suffer. Factors that Affect Airline Pilot Salaries In general, just like most industries, an inexperienced airline pilot just starting out in the industry will make much less than a pilot who has been flying fo r 10 or 20 years at the same airline. But there are other factors, as well. Regional vs major airlines In the air travel world, there are many types of airlines. There are dezentral airlines, low-cost carriers, national carriers, major airlines, and legacy airlines. The pilot salaries at each of these categories, and even within them, can be vastly different. A regional airline like Cape Air, which flies routes in smaller airplanes like the Cessna 402 and the ATR42 from the East Coast and in the Pacific, pays a first-year first officer (FO) in the C-402 less than $20/hour, as of 2018, while some other regional airlines will pay first-year FOs as much as four times that. Jump up to a major legacy carrier like Delta or Alaska Airlines, and youll see pay scales climb sharply. First Officer vs CaptainRemember that FO at Cape Air who makes less than $20/hour his first year? Well, compare that to a first-year captain at the same company, who might make triple that. The differences at othe r airlines are similar.Time at a companyAirline pilot pay scales often are determined by seniority and years at the company, so a pilot in his or her 10th year at a company will make significantly more than one in his or her second year.Monthly minimum hoursMonthly minimum hours at each airline are another factor that impacts annual salary. One airline might guarantee only 50 hours per month, while another will guarantee 80 hours of pay per month. Gaining Experience and Seniority When a pilot first starts at an airline, hes usually on reserve status for a period of time. This requires a pilot to be on call either at the airport or within a certain range of the airport. He may find out hes flying a few nights before a trip is assigned or a few hours before. During this period, a pilot might be paid differently. Also, pilots earn per diem while on trips, and different airlines have different per diem rates and have different rules for per diem. When considering pilot pay and bene fits, a pilots quality of life also is an important consideration. As one of the benefits at an airline, a pilot may receive bonus pay, paid time off, vacation time, paternity or maternity leave, and other various benefits. A pilot also must consider how many nights hell be away from home, how many hours hell be required to work, and even the types of hotels and food offered while traveling. Jump-seat privileges are also a consideration, as some airline jobs offer privileges on many other airlines, while others dont offer these privileges at all. Paying to commute to your job can be costly. For all of these reasons, a pilot might report making $25,000 per year or $225,000 per year. But in general, newly trained, inexperienced pilots might make between $30,000 and $50,000 per year, while an experienced pilot who has climbed his way up from first officer at a regional airline to first officer at a major airline and then finally, a captain at a major airline over a period of 10 years will probably earn $100,000 or more.

An incredible 1 in 7 Americans thinks men shouldnt take time off for a baby

An incredible 1 in 7 Americans thinks men shouldnt take time off for a babyAn incredible 1 in 7 Americans thinks men shouldnt take time off for a babyMaybe this is why parental leave policies in the U.S. are so far behind many Americans think that new babies should be the sole responsibility of the mother.About one in seven Americans say men shouldnt be able to take any paternity leave, paid or unpaid, according to a new Pew Research Center study. For comparison, more Americans are supportive of women taking maternity leave- only 3% say women shouldnt take any leave. This number is tied to thebelief that more Americans think women are better caregivers. Although 71% of Americans know that its important for babies to bond with both parents, 53% believe women do a better job at caregiving for babies than men.Its older men who are most resistant to the idea of paternity leave. Around 36% of men who are ages 65 and older believe men shouldnt take paternity leave, while only 10% of men ages 30 to 49 believe this.Political views play a role, too. The more liberal you believe yourself to be, the more likely you were to support paternity leave, researchers found. Around 26% of conservative Republicans and 13% of liberal Republicans did not believe in paternity leave, compared to 9% of liberal Democrats and 11% of conservative Democrats. For the parents who would actually take parental leave, the Pew Research Center study found that in the last two years, the average time of leave was longer for women than men. Men would only take an average of one week of leave, while women would take an average of 11weeks.The U.S. currently does not federally mandate any paid family leave, but paid parental leave has been shown to increase employee retention, and to keep more women in the workforce. Fathers who took two or more weeks of leavewere found to be more involved in the daily upbringing of their childs life later on.
